One of the most frequently asked questions at all the exploration of topics about nursing programs is why the students will be taking life-changing courses. A real answer to that question may begin with the very personal and meaningful survey of life experiences taken by the students themselves.The first step toward life experiences is to take surveys of your own life. Many students make lists of about four or five different persons and then ask the question, 'What would you like to write about?' Some students will write about family, friends, pets, family histories, academic topics, special interests, career experiences and even sports. After each student has completed their list, they ask, 'What do you think about this?'The next step is to see if your life experiences are worth writing about. If they are, keep taking surveys about those experiences. One common mistake made by students is to try to fi t what they remember into the search for words. For example, a student might say, 'I wish I had taken more advanced courses in nursing', or 'I wish I had taken the RN course and worked in a more practical setting'. Such statements are not descriptive of what a nurse should say, but rather how the student thinks about what she remembers.Of course, to do true experiences, they need to come from actual events. Some students have helpful and insightful recollections of things such as their first day on a new shift, their first vacation or holiday, or even a time when they actually reached out to a person in distress. These are the memories that will provide a healthy respect for the nurse and a safe and loving role model for other nursing students.The discovery of a meaning to life, learning to love the nursing profession, growing as a nurse and showing compassion for others and how to care for them are all important aspects of life as a nurse. Exploration of topics about nursing will a lso provide the benefits of an experience in a career change, a career expansion, and maybe even growth as a better nurse. All of these benefits combine to create a joyous, enriching, rewarding experience for the student.
